Top seed Alex de Minaur begins his European Open campaign with a second-round showdown against unseeded Roberto Carballes Baena. Read on for our prediction of this match slated for Wednesday.

De Minaur finished as runner-up here in 2020 and on his return, will hope to go one better. The Australian has contested three tour finals on indoor hardcourts. That, and his form this season, makes favourite for the title.

He has compiled a 40-13 record, claimed two titles – in Hertogenbosch and Acapulco, then had a runner-up finish in Rotterdam. De Minaur has been a constant ATP top 10 fixture but is currently close to slipping out.

The 25-year-old, who is returning to the tour after a month-long hiatus, has dropped to 10th in the live ranking. Coming to this match, De Minaur won both times he squared off with Carballes Baena.

Roberto Carballes Baena had a strong performance in his opening round and will hope to bring the momentum here. The Spaniard saw off Dominik Koepfer in straight sets of 6-4, 6-0 in his first indoor hardcourt appearance of the year.

Carballes Baena isn’t a strong indoor hard-court player. He has often struggled on the surface and throughout his career, has compiled a 14-15 record when competing indoors.

A finalist in Marrakech back in April, Carballes Baena has had a strong tour season. He has compiled a 36-27 record and has made at least the quarter-finals in four tournaments.

Progressing to this round has moved him one spot to 53rd in the live ranking. The winner here will play Mariano Navone, Alexey Vatutin, or Hugo Gaston for a place in the semi-finals.
