We're guaranteed an Australian player in the last eight of the US Open. That's because tenth seed Alex de Minaur faces unseeded Jordan Thompson in round four of this hard court Grand Slam. Here's our match prediction.

Jordan Thompson is in the fourth round in New York for the second time. His only other last 16 appearance here was achieved in 2020. This remains the only Grand Slam in which he's made it past round three.

The Australian was so nearly seeded for this tournament. When the seedings were decided, he was in 33rd position so missed out. Now he's up to 29th in the live rankings so his days as an unseeded player in Grand Slams seems to be over.

He recently reached the final of the hard court tournament played in Atlanta. Thompson was also a quarter-finalist in Washington and is again going well on hard courts.

This tournament has seen him beat two seeds so far. Seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz and 30th-seeded Matteo Arnaldi  have both been beaten and he's yet to drop a set in this hard court Grand Slam.

Alex de Minaur is attempting to make it into his third successive Grand Slam quarter-final. The last was at Wimbledon but he pulled out of his match against Novak Djokovic due to a hip injury.

He's ranked ninth in the live list but a place higher in the ATP Race. Beating Thompson will take him into seventh above Djokovic. De Minaur has reached one US Open quarter-final in the past, that was in 2020.

To reach this stage for the second year in a row, he's beaten Marcos Giron, Otto Virtanen and Daniel Evans. He dropped a set against both Giron and Evans. We go for over 3.5 sets to be played in this match.
