Dominic Thiem is chasing his first Grand Slam title, a statement that applies to all of the eight remaining players. He continues his bid for that elusive first title when facing Australian Alex de Minaur in the quarter finals. Thiem is seeded second for the US Open Men's Singles and is the highest seed left in the draw. His best performance in this tournament has already been equalled. Unlike in 2018 when he lost a five-setter to Rafael Nadal, Thiem is looking to reach his first US Open semi-final. Earlier in the year, he made it to the final of the Australian Open, being beaten in the final by a now absent Novak Djokovic. Thiem had to go to four sets to get a third round win over Marin Cilic, his other victories have all been in straight sets. He put in an impressive performance to defeat Feliz Auger-Aliassime in the last sixteen, winning a first set tie-break and then dropping just two games in the next couple of sets. The Austrian will do all he can to prove that he is far more than an expert player on clay.

Alex de Minaur has made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. His previous best was reaching the fourth round here last year, so he obviously has a liking for New York. He’s ranked 28 in the world but seeded 21st for this tournament. 2020 had seen him fail to win a match in a singles tournament. He had shown his true form in the ATP Cup though with victories over Alexander Zverev and Denis Shapovolov. To reach this quarter final, he has beaten just one seeded player. That was 11th seeded Karan Khachanov in the third round, who was beaten in five sets. That was a topsy-turvy match with the Australian winning the first set, only to win four games in the next two. He recovered by only dropping four games in the final two sets and will need a bit more consistency in this match. This is going to be his toughest task though and the tip is for Thiem to get a straight sets win.
