Second seed Daniil Medvedev has a great chance to reach the final of the National Bank Open. He takes on unseeded Alex de Minaur in the last eight of this outdoor hard court Masters event in Toronto. He's the only seed left in the bottom half of the draw. The winner of this match will face either Mackenzie McDonald or Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina for a place in the final. Medvedev is third in the world rankings and will stay in that position even if winning this tournament. He's a place higher in the Live ATP Race and reaching the final would see him go into second above Novak Djokovic. The Russian has won five titles this year and four have been on hard courts. He won this title two years ago and with no seeds between him and the final will be confident of getting a chance to win a second National Bank Open. This tournament has seen him beat two Italian opponents in the form of qualifier Matteo Arnaldi and 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti and without dropping a set. He leads de Minaur 4-1 in previous meetings with all being played on hard courts, though he did lose to de Minaur in Paris last year.

Alex de Minaur started this Masters tournament ranked 18th. He's up a place in the live rankings and a win here could take him to 14th. That would beat his career high of 15th achieved two years ago. The Australian has had a good year and is 13th in the Live ATP Race. Beating Medvedev would take him up to 11th and boost his ATP Tour finals qualification hopes. He has won one title this year, that was in a hard court tournament held in Acapulco in March. He's in good form at present having reached the Queen's Club final on grass and then the last eight in the Atlanta hard court event. That was followed by a run to the final in Los Cabos where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. His form has continued this week with two seeds being beaten. Round one saw him defeat 11th seeded Cameron Norrie in straight sets. Then he defeated Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo before a three-set win over the eighth seeded Taylor Fritz.
