Alex de Minaur and Andy Murray, both unseeded, will meet in the first round at the China Open on Friday. The winner will advance to play either Lorenzo Sonego or Ugo Humbert. Alex de Minaur has won all four previous meetings with Murray. He has defeated him already twice this season with the latest victory coming on grass at Queen’s Club back in June. The Australian has been in fine form this season, especially on hard court, and will be confident of victory here. He has compiled a 38-20 record and has registered 23 of his victories on hard court. The surface has also provided him with his only tour title of the season thus far. de Minaur, ranked 12th in the ATP, has finished as runner-up three times this season, twice on hard court. The 24-year-old is arriving for this match after helping guide Australia to the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

Andy Murray also helped guide Great Britain to the Davis Cup last eight. He has since then played one tournament and was eliminated in the second round in Zhuhai. The three-time Grand Slam champion is having a decent campaign and has won 30 of the 44 matches he has played. The majority of his wins, 13, have come on hard court and so too have most of his defeats. Murray won the 2016 title here to become only the second Brit to triumph in Beijing. As a former champion, he will fancy his chances of a prolonged stay in the tournament. The 36-year-old has one tour final appearance in 2023 and this was achieved on hard court in Qatar. He is currently ranked 39th in the live ranking.
