Unseeded Pavel Kotov faces qualifier Albert Ramos Vinolas in the Madrid Masters first round. Whoever wins this will face 32nd-seeded Jordan Thompson in the second round of this outdoor clay court tournament. Kotov is 72nd in the live list and three places higher in the ATP Race. A win for him in this match will take him into round two in Madrid for the first time in his career. He's also never made it past round one at Roland Garros. The Russian has had some success on clay and won a Challenger Tour event in San Marino a couple of years ago. Last week saw him lose in round one of the Barcelona Open. Before that though he got to the semi-finals of the clay court tournament held in Marrakech.

Albert Ramos Vinolas is outside the top 100 in the live rankings. The 36-year-old is 102nd after winning two qualifiers to make it into the first round. He had to come from behind to get past Diego Schwartzman and then defeated compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets. He's been struggling for results on the ATP Tour with first round losses in both Marrakech and Barcelona. Vinolas played on the South American clay court tour earlier this year but in four tournaments he failed to get past the last 16. His only recent good run was getting to the last four of a Challenger Tour event held in Murcia. In the ten times he's played in this tournament, he's never made it past round two.
