Gael Monfils has had a disappointing 2021 and it could be about to get worse. He's the 14th seed at Roland Garros and takes on Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round of the French Open. Monfils has had just five matches this year and was absent from the tour between the Australian Open and the Rome Masters. Only one match has been won by the 34-year-old this year. That was in Montpellier when he beat Thiago Seyboth Wild. His opponent was the world number 122 at the time and was only in the tournament as a lucky loser. Monfils has gone down four places in the rankings this year and is down at 266th in terms of ranking points earned this year. He's lost two of his last three matches against his opponent.

While Monfils has been struggling (he had a poor end to 2020 as well), the 33-year-old has been climbing the rankings. He's gone up eight places this year and is a strong player on clay, well he is Spanish. He reached a final and a semi-final in two clay court tournaments held in Argentina. Back in Europe, his success on clay has continued. He made it to the last four in Marbella, took a set off Andrey Rublev in Barcelona and then won the Estoril tournament with a win over Cameron Norrie in the final. That was his third ATP title and all have come on this surface. Before that he won 11 titles on clay on the Challenger and Futures circuit. Back him to beat Monfils.
