Albert Ramos Vinolas continues his defence of the Estoril Open title. The sixth seed faces lucky loser Fernando Verdasco in an all-Spanish quarter final, The only other seed left in this half of the draw is Marin Cilic. Vinolas is ranked 31st in the world and that's a rise of 14 places since the start of this year. The 34-year-old has already won one clay court tournament this year. That was in Cordoba two months ago. Vinolas also reached the last four in Santiago and the last 16 in Monte Carlo.  He had a good win over Cameron Norrie (ranked 10th at the time) before losing to Hubert Hurkacz. He didn't fare so well in Barcelona, losing in the first round to Lloyd Harris. Last year saw him beat Cameron Norrie in the Estoril Open final and on his way to the title, he beat Verdasco in straight sets. In his defence of the title this week, Vinolas has beaten Jordan Thompson in three sets (middle set lost) and Kwon-Soon-woo after losing the first set.

Fernando Verdasco began this week ranked 118th but was as low as 201st in February. 13 years ago the 38-year-old was ranked seventh. This is his eighth clay court tournament of the year with quarter final appearances in Santa Cruz and Buenos Aires. He has won one title this year but that was in a Challenger Tour event in Monterrey. It was a hard court event and no player in the top 240 was beaten. His week in Estoril didn't get off to a good start with defeat in the second qualifying round by Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The withdrawal of second seeded Diego Schwartzmann saw him earn a place in the main draw as a lucky loser and even got a bye into the second round. He had a win over the qualifier Pablo Cuevas for the loss of only five games to set up this unexpected quarter final appearance. This is his 11th match against Vinolas with the score level at 5-5. The last three played in the past three years have all been won by Vinolas in straight sets and all were played on clay. Back Vinolas to get another win in this match.
