Rising star Alex Michelsen has been given a wild card for the 2023 US Open. The American faces Albert Ramos Vinolas in the first round with the winner then taking on either 23rd seed Nicolas Jarry or unseeded Luca Van Assche. Michelsen only turned 19 last week and is ranked 127th in the world which is his career high. This is his first time in the US Open singles, last year he only played in the doubles. The teenager has had a successful year on the ITF and Challenger Tour but also made an impact on the main ATP Tour. He reached the final of the Hall of Fame grass court tournament this year, so remember his name when it comes to Wimbledon next year. He's also had some recent success on hard courts and last week got to the last 16 of the Winston Salem Open beating two players ranked in the top 100. He's definitely a star of the future.

Albert Ramos Vinolas is ranked 88th and turned professional when his opponent was just three years ago. Six years ago he was his career high 17th but the Spaniard is not at that level now. Vinolas has been playing in the US Open since 2011 and he's never managed to get past the second round. Seven times he's been knocked out in the first round and another early exit looks likely here. The fact he hasn't played any hard court warm-up events shows he doesn't have a great deal of ambition for this tournament. Coming into this tournament he has only won one of his last four matches, all on clay. In terms of hard court matches played this year, Vinolas lost all four matches played down under at the start of the year. He then headed to South America to play on their clay court tour. Two hard court tournaments were played in March and he lost two more matches. We go for Mickelsen to get his first US Open main draw victory.
