At the start of this week, only two places separated these two players in the world rankings. Albert Ramos Vinolas was ranked 46th with opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 48th. Vinolas has already had success on clay this year, reaching the final of a tournament in Cordoba, Argentina. Losing to the then world number 335 Juan Manuel Cerundelo in the final wasn't his greatest day though. The Cerundelo family won't be on his Christmas card list this year. He then lost to his brother Francisco in the Buenos Aires semi-final. Another semi-final followed in Marabella but he didn't get past the last 16 in Monte Carlo or Barcelona. This week has seen him win three matches in straight sets. The quarter final saw him get the better of unseeded Corentin Moutet, the third unseeded player he's beaten this week.

The number seven seed does finally get to face a seeded opponent in this semi-final. He's up against the eighth seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who is also having a strong 2021. Two weeks ago saw the Spaniard reach the last eight in Monte Carlo, including a win over Matteo Berrettini and Alex de Minaur. He'd previously made it to the quarter finals in Marseille and beat Hubert Hurkacz who has since won the Miami Open. This tournament got off to a shaky start for Fokina, needing three sets to get past Pablo Andujar. He's been better since then though and knocked out third seeded Ugo Humbert in straight sets in his quarter final. The pair are 1-1 in their head-to-head, both played on clay in 2019. A bet on Fokina to win is the tip.
