Leylah Fernandez is the eighth seed for the WTA 500 hard court tournament in Tokyo. Round one sees her face unseeded Ajla Tomljanovic with the winner taking on either Varvara Gracheva or qualifier Maia Hontama next. Here's our match prediction. 

Fernandez is at 35th in the live rankings and is hoping for a deep run in this tournament. The Canadian hasn't reached a quarter-final since the Cincinnati tournament held in August. Her last event was the Wuhan Open where she lost in the last 16.

The 22-year-old has only reached one final this year and that was in a grass court tournament. Fernandez has had one previous meeting with her opponent. That was played this year with Tomljanovic winning in three sets in a grass court event.

Tomljanovic is 81st in the live rankings and her most recent tournament was in the Ningbo event played last week. The Australian made it through qualifying but then lost to Yue Yuan in round one.

The 31-year-old showed some good form when getting to the final of the WTA 125 tournament played in Hong Kong. Earlier in the year she reached another singles final but on grass. We go for over 20.5 games to be played in this match.
