They began the competition with a comprehensive victory over Uganda, where they bowled out their opponents for a mere 58 runs. They then put in another dominant display in match two against New Zealand, winning the match by 84 runs after again dismissing their opponents cheaply. Chasing down 160, the Black Caps were knocked over for 75 in 15.2 overs. Owing to their commanding performances, Afghanistan have the out-and-out best net run rate of any side in the competition which could be crucial later in the tournament. 

Meanwhile, in complete contrast, Papua New Guinea are still in search of their first win at the 2024 T20 World Cup and defeat here will guarantee that they will be eliminated from the competition in the group stage. They were beaten by the West Indies in their tournament opener by five wickets after posting a target of 137 in their 20 overs. Sese Bau scored a half-century for the Barramundis in that match, and that remains the side’s only innings of any real significance in the competition so far. In match two, they were bowled out for just 77 by Uganda, who went on to chase down the target with three wickets and ten balls to spare. With the Blue Tigers on deck and the Black Caps to come next, it’s difficult to make much of a case for Papua New Guinea to muster a comeback.
