Afghanistan - India Squad Analysis
While we are yet to see the star-studded Indian top-order hit full stride in this tournament, Rishabh Pant has arguably been the pick of the batsman for the Men in Blue.
The wicket-keeper batsman is averaging 42 and a strike rate of 124.67. He is also coming off an excellent Indian Premier League campaign, where he was the top-scorer for the Delhi Capitals.
Arshdeep Singh took 19 wickets in the IPL and notched a career-best 4/9 in the last match against the US. Axar Patel is one to watch as India’s primary spin option.
To illustrate just how good Afghanistan have been in this tournament, we can look at the top individual performers in the tournament.
The top run-scorer to date is Rahmanullah Gurbaz with 167 runs in four innings. Ibrahim Zadran is fourth on the list with 152 runs and has struck the most fours of any player in the competition (17).
The top wicket-taker rank also belongs to Afghanistan, with Fazahal Farooqi holding the out-and-out lead on 12 wickets. Tanzim Hasan Sakib rounds out the top five, currently on nine wickets in four matches.
Afghanistan - India Form Analysis
While this competition has already delivered a few surprises, India have gone about their business as usual.
They came through the group stages undefeated, with a record of four wins and one draw, resulting from a washed-out match against Canada. India finished two points ahead of the US with a net run rate of +1.137.
The Men in Blue beat Ireland by eight wickets, Pakistan by six runs and the United States by seven wickets before their no-result outcome in the final group-stage match. With that, they are now on a nine-match winning streak in T20Is dating back to mid-December.
India have beaten Afghanistan in all three of their previous T20 World Cup matchups.
However, Afghanistan have already proven that they cannot be overlooked in this competition.
Barring a final-match defeat to the West Indies, they were sensational in the group stage, winning each of their first three games. While victories over Uganda and Papua New Guinea were expected, they managed to pull off an impressive victory over New Zealand. That win ultimately knocked the Black Caps out of the competition.
The defeat to the West Indies last week is the only one the Blue Tigers have conceded in their last eight T20Is, dating back to March this year.
However, Afghanistan have lost seven of their eight previous T20 encounters with India in all competitions, while one match ended in a draw.
