India cricket team captain Rohit Sharma lifted the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy after his side secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Dubai earlier this month. In doing so, the Men in Blue not only became the first side to win the Champions Trophy three times but also extended their incredible record in limited-over cricket to 23-1.

India’s Remarkable 23-1 Record in Limited Overs Matches

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, New Zealand posted a very defendable 251/7 in the final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy thanks to half-centuries by Kiwi batters Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell. The final was held in Dubai on March 9, owing to India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the tournament.

In response, Rohit Sharma led the Men in Blue to victory with 76 runs off 83 balls at the top of the order, while Shreyas Iyer contributed 48 off 62 in the middle overs before KL Rahul saw the side over the line with an unbeaten 34 from 33 balls. The victory was India’s third in the competition, making them the most successful team in Champions Trophy history.

With that result, India also extended their dominance in the white-ball version of the sport - over the last two years, the Blue Shirts have now won two of their last three ICC tournaments. India’s sensational run began at the 2023 ICC ODI, where they got to the final with 10 consecutive wins, but fell at the final hurdle to Australia by six wickets in Ahmedabad.

However, the ODI World Cup disappointment did not phase the Blue-clad juggernauts, who brought an end to their 11-year wait for an ICC title less than a year later at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas. India, once again, ran through the tournament with a flawless record, and this time, made no mistake, beating South Africa in Bridgetown by seven wickets to lift the trophy.

After securing their first T20 World Cup crown since the inaugural edition in 2007, India carried their impeccable limited-over form in 2025, winning the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this month. Sharma’s side were the favourites with all the best online bookmakers and finished the competition with a stunning 5-0 record, clinching the trophy for the first time after 12 years.

With the latest title in the bag, India have firmly announced themselves as the team to beat in global tournaments. Spanning the last three major ICC events, the Men in Blue have played a total of 25 games, winning 23 and losing once, while one match ended in a no result - a record rarely seen in international cricket.

Sharma, who has now led India to consecutive ICC titles, holds a stunning record of 27 wins and just three defeats in ICC limited-over competitions. His 90% win rate now stands as the best for any captain who has led their nation in 15 or more matches across three tournaments, while he is third on the list for the most wins at ICC men’s events, only behind his predecessor MS Dhoni (41) and Aussie great Ricky Ponting (40).

The Blue Shirts will resume action in June when they travel to face England in the five-day format, and you can find all our cricket predictions for that tour ahead of the first match.
