World number 138 Sorana Cirstea will face off with 22nd seed Magdalena Frech in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. The winner of their second career meeting will set up a third-round showdown with Victoria Mboko or Diana Shnaider. Our prediction for this match is below.
Magdalena Frech is having an uncharacteristic year and will hope to perform a U-turn with a strong run in Cincinnati. The Pole has found it hard to win matches and so far has managed just 10 wins in 30 matches.
Two of her wins came more recently in Washington, where she earned a quarter-final finish, her best result of the season.
Frech’s struggles have threatened her run as a WTA top 30 player. She is currently placed 29th in the live ranking. Frech defeated Cirstea in Birmingham two seasons ago.
